Beginning Photography: A Primer

Having helped a handful of people get started in their photography hobbies/careers over the last few years, I figured it’s about time to put the tips I give everyone in writing.  This will be a weekly series aimed at those who have an interest in photography, but aren’t quite sure where to start.  In time I’ll cover more advanced topics, but for now, I aim to guide the absolute beginners.  The posts in this series will be as follows:

Week 1: Choosing the camera that’s right for you
Week 2: Learning your way around the camera
Week 3: Understanding Exposure
Week 4: Basics of Composition
Week 5: Post-Processing with Lightroom

A final project will be posted at the end of the series to help you visualize everything you learn.  If you aren’t quite sure if photography is something you want to get into, take a look at my post titled A Word on Cameras - it may help.  If you’re ready to take the plunge, check back next week!

… Hello!

Now that I’ve made a huge post already, I figure it’s time to introduce myself and this site!

I’m Matt Kment, and I make stuff.  What kind of stuff? Photos! Graphics! Logos! Websites! UX Design! Basically, I dabble in a lot of things.  I’m not here to promote myself (though if you want to hire me for a project, you can certainly contact me) as much as I am to help others (that means you!) learn to do some of the things I do.

Here I’ll be posting guides, editorials, and perhaps a random thought here and there – though I’m going to try to leave my personal life off of this site as much as possible.  Anyone is free to comment on anything they want.  If I didn’t explain something wrong enough, tell me.  If I’m wrong about something, tell me.  If you love puppies, tell me.  All I ask is that you don’t spam links to your own site (linking your own site as part of a comment is fine, if it’s relevant to the discussion), and please remain civil.  Starting flame wars will get you banned from commenting in a hurry.  Don’t do it.  Also, in the spirit of full disclosure, you’ll find a lot of links to products on Amazon in my articles.  Yes, they have a referral link, so Amazon will throw me a few dollars if you end up buying something that you click on here.  It’s how I justify the time I spend writing my posts.  There are no ads here, and I hope to keep it that way.

Hi, hello, and welcome.  I hope you find something useful here!

A Word On Cameras

Something I hear quite often is “Your camera takes great pictures!”

To a degree, this is true.  The amount of detail and dynamic range a modern, high-end DSLR can capture is much higher than what a point-and-shoot or phone camera can handle.  However, unless you want huge prints, or are frequently dealing with tricky lighting situations, that doesn’t mean much.  I can take great pictures with a point and shoot, and terrible pictures with a DSLR.  So, what’s the deal here?
